Spodumene can be used in the production of lithium carbonate, a feedstock for the production of lithium chemicals such as lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, lithium nitride and lithium metal.

Lithium carbonate is produced from spodumene by reaction with sulfuric acid to form lithium sulfate followed by treatment with soda ash to yield lithium carbonate.

Lithium carbonate and other fine chemicals are employed in pharmaceuticals, batteries, catalysis and many other materials and chemicals manufacturing applications.
