Static electricity is a natural phenomenon that can be dangerous. Static charges can build up on the surface of petrol pump hoses, on polyethylene bags, or boxes containing explosive materials such as gunpowder, and also on tools used in confined spaces, such as in mines and tunnels. To prevent serious problems, the best solution is to conduct the static charge harmlessly to earth.

Most natural thermoplastic resins are electric insulators. By adding carefully selected conductive blacks to these resins, the formulated compounds will become conductive.

Cabot has developed a range of conductive carbon blacks that greatly reduce the risk of a catastrophic discharge of electrostatic energy.
