Dispersion Information: The normal procedure is to disperse CAB-O-SIL® fumed silica into resin and then add styrene to let down to final styrene content. Dispersion is poorer if resin has high initial styrene content.
High speed dispersion equipment (Cowles or other rotary mixers) is generally used for gel coats. A Hegman grind of 2–5 NS or a grindometer reading of 40–75 microns is typical. Viscosities range from 5,000–15,000 mPa.s (Brookfield LV viscometer, 6 rpm).
For laminating resins, batches are larger and "in-line" dispersers are common. Sonic homogenizers are frequently used.
