Security features can be incorporated into a document in a variety of ways. For example, it may be incorporated directly in the paper or substrate the document is made of in the form of fibers or a thread. Features may be printed using special inks.

Security features are usually categorized as overt, covert or forensic. Overt:  A security device that can be detected and recognized using only human senses: Holograms, Watermarks, Intaglio Texture,  Threads in Paper, Thermochromics, Photochromics, etc. Covert:  A security device that is detectable only when interrogated by a special detection device: Phosphors, Energy Absorbers, Magnetics, Microtext, RFID, etc. Forensic:  A security device that is detectable only using laboratory analysis by trained specialists.
