In December 2010, Cabot joined the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The ACC represents the chemical industry's commitment to improving environmental, health and safety performance through its Responsible Care® program. A key requirement of Cabot's membership in ACC is the implementation of Responsible Care across our company.
Cabot is implementing RC 14001, which incorporates the requirements of both the ACC Responsible Care and the ISO 14001 Management Systems, for all of our manufacturing facilities, beginning with those in North America. Several of our manufacturing locations in Europe and South America are already certified to their regional or industrial Responsible Care organizations. Responsible Care is the global reference for excellence as it relates to safety, health and environmental (SH&E) performance and is a public declaration of our deep belief in the value of external engagement and third party certification of Cabot's SH&E management systems.
We believe Responsible Care is a natural extension of our long-held focus on continuous SH&E improvement and Cabot's "Drive to Zero" safety and environmental programs. Even prior to our membership in ACC, many of the Responsible Care principles and system requirements were already functioning well within our company. This implementation gives us the opportunity to improve and expand our SH&E excellence to include external stakeholders such as our customers, suppliers and local communities. Responsible Care increases Cabot's public transparency consistent with industry peers and establishes an SH&E management system compatible with current business models (Plan-Do-Check-Act). Implementation of the Responsible Care management system drives improvement in both regulatory and non-regulatory areas of SH&E performance, overall efficiencies and bottom line costs.
Many of are our employees around the globe are engaged in the implementation of Responsible Care and we are currently beginning a thorough training program that demonstrates the role each and every one of our employees has in adhering to these important principles.
