Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted from Cabot manufacturing facilities. Other GHGs, namely methane and nitrous oxide, are also emitted by our operations, but in minor quantities. Collectively the quantities of all three GHGs are reported as CO2-equivalents (CO2-e).

Cabot CO2-e emissions from our manufacturing facilities, research, and corporate/regional administrative facilities for calendar year 2010 were 4.25 million metric tons. While our total product output increased 14% from 2009 to 2010, our total CO2-e emissions increased only 11%.

GHG emissions are calculated according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocols established by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Climate change due to GHG emissions is one of the most complex issues Cabot faces today. Our goal is to reduce our GHG by 20% by 2020. Progress toward that goal will be achieved by reducing direct emissions. This goal reflects our ongoing commitment to decrease raw material input, increase product yields, and reduce emissions in our operations.
