Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Waste
Cabot generated approximately 497,000 metric tons of waste in 2010, of which 86% (426,000 metric tons) is classified as hazardous and 14% (71,000 metric tons) as non-hazardous. Cabot's total product output increased 14% from 2009 to 2010, but the total amount of waste generated decreased 18%.

Approximately 52% of Cabot's non-hazardous waste volume consists of mine tailings generated from operations at its Lac du Bonnet, Canada mine. Much of the reduction in non-hazardous waste generation in 2010 can be attributed to the cessation of certain activities at the mine. However, mining activities are projected to increase in 2011, so waste volumes are expected to increase as well.
Nearly all of Cabot's hazardous waste is generated at the Tuscola, USA fumed metals oxide facility. This facility is currently in the midst of a multi-year plan aimed at reducing its hazardous waste. From 2009 to 2010, the facility decreased its hazardous waste by 2%, and its hazardous waste intensity decreased 17%.
