Abstract:

Since the middle '80s, the degradation phenomenon called "Electro-Chemical
Degradation" (hereafter referred to as "ECD") has been identified as cause of
failure in coolant hoses. ECD shows up via the development of peculiar
longitudinal cracks, initiating from the innerlayer and propagating through the
coolant hose section, leading to hose leakage or even to the hose bursting.
Typical for an ECD process is the "striaes" and "trees" type structure, which
have been found in hoses before actual cracks develop.


SPHERON®6000 and SPHERON®6400 carbon blacks provide increased resistance to ECD
in radiator hoses at much higher loadings compared with carbon black, such as
ASTM N550. This paper has been prepared and presented by Cabot's M. Lucchi at
