Are Cabot's aerogel products safe?

Yes. Cabot's aerogel products, including Lumira™ aerogel and Enova™ aerogel, are surface-treated precipitated synthetic amorphous silica gel that is chemically very similar to other silica products. It consists of 97% treated precipitated silica amorphous silica gel and 3% water. Precipitated silica is a common product used in personal care products such as lotions and cosmetics. Cabot's aerogel products do not contain crystalline silica and are neither carcinogenic nor mutagenic.
Are Lumira daylighting systems resistant to moisture?

Lumira aerogel is completely hydrophobic in nature. It is this feature that prevents any type of mold or mildew growth within the system.
Are the daylighting systems with Lumira insulation considered a ‘Green Product’?

Lumira aerogel is safe, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly.

Additionally, the McDonough Building Design Council (MBDC) contends Cabot's aerogel is consistent with the MBDC "Cradle to Cradle" Design Philosophy.
How does aerogel differ from existing fumed silica products?

Aerogel is a treated silica product with a surface that looks chemically similar to common silica products. The most significant difference is the higher surface area or larger pore volume of the aerogel compared to the silica.
How is Cabot's aerogel manufactured?

Cabot Corporation’s aerogel manufacturing process is analagous to the commercial production of silica gel. The treated gel is dried preserving its porous structure and rendering the product hydrophobic through a patented process.
Is Lumira aerogel a proven insulation material in the architectural daylighting market?

Yes, Lumira™ aerogel, formerly Nanogel® aerogel, has been successfully installed in a variety of daylighting systems in both North America and Europe. Installations have ranged from schools, to hospitals, to swimming pool and office enclosures.
Is Lumira™ aerogel insulation UV stable (will there be any discoloration over time)?

Lumira insulation systems are UV stable. Neither the properties (color stability) nor performance (insulation) of translucent Lumira aerogel will degrade over time.
What are the key attributes of daylighting systems with Lumira™ insulation?

Improves thermal performance, Increases light transmission, Improves ability to meet building codes without tradeoffs, Improves condensation resistance factor, Improves acoustic performance
What is Cabot aerogel?

Lumira aerogel and Enova aerogel are Cabot Corporation’s trade names for its family of hydrophobic silica aerogel.
What is the appearance of the Lumira insulation system inside a channel glass cavity?

The natural vertical channels of the polycarbonate create a vertical appearance when translucent Lumira aerogel is filled inside the polycarbonate panel, consistent with the linear appearance of channel glass. Lumira aerogel provides an “ice cube” appearance inside the channel glass. To mute the distinctiveness of the vertical channels of the Lumira aerogel-filled polycarbonate panel, an opaque-colored panel is also available.
